Biggert Applauds Increase in HUD Funding to Help Homeless

U.S. Representative Judy Biggert (R-IL-13) today issued the following statement, commending the U.S. Department on Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for awarding $1.47 billion to 7,100 homeless programs across the country, including $83.2 million to 400 homeless programs in Illinois. HUD's announcement to award an increase of $62 million over last year is welcome news following last week's hearingchaired by Rep. Biggert, which was held to examine legislation she introduced to expand housing assistance for homeless children. Biggert, co-founder and co-chair of the House Caucus on Homelessness, has led efforts to fight homelessness among children, veterans and our country's most vulnerable citizens.

"Over the last few years, our country's tough economic climate and high foreclosure rate have left many families out on the streets. It's a common misconception that homelessness is not prevalent in our suburban communities, but poverty knows no boundaries. I'm thrilled that this year HUD is awarding its largest contribution ever to homeless assistance programs and I know the organizations in my district will put the money to good use -- not just providing shelter, but helping put families in need on a path to a brighter future. I'll continue to work closely with HUD to fight against homelessness and ensure that our nation's largest homeless populations --including children and veterans -- can find the help they need."
